Chempedia is the free and continuously-updated online chemical encyclopedia. Each entry gives information about the structure, uses, history, and significance of a chemical compound.
Different By Design
Chempedia is different from most other chemical databases in that its textual content is created and updated in real-time by a large and diverse community of volunteers worldwide through Wikipedia. This means every one of Chempedia's compound monographs can be changed and adapted by you. And if you find a Compound Monograph is missing from Chempedia, you can create it and make it available for others to use.
Search
With Chempedia, you can search for compounds by structure or by text using a compound name, CAS Number, or PubChem CID.
Browse
Make discoveries on Chempedia by browsing. To find out what Chempedia is all about, try browsing a randomized list of Compound Monographs. For the latest updates browse monographs by recent changes. Or to keep up with the most actively-edited Monographs, you can browse by recent activity.
Community
Chempedia's textual content is written by volunteers worldwide via Wikipedia. To get an idea of the size and scope of this community, check out our contributors page.
Technology
Chempedia combines text descriptions from Wikipedia with chemical structure information from PubChem. ChemWriter™ provides the structure search and 2D structure rendering interface. InChI is used for quick exact structrure lookups. Chempedia is built with Ruby on Rails, an open source Web development framework.
Created By
Chempedia is a creation of Metamolecular, LLC, a privately-held company based in La Jolla, California.
